Review: Remarkably Bright Creatures

Let’s talk about Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt, a beautiful, slow-burn novel that completely stole my heart! From the first page to the very last, this book delivers a story that feels like a cozy cup of tea on a cold day — warm, comforting, and oh-so-satisfying.

The Storyline: A Slow, Cozy Burn

This is not one of those books that rushes from one plot twist to the next. Instead, it takes its time to unfold, much like savoring a good book on a lazy Sunday. The story is filled with quiet moments of reflection and discovery, making you want to linger on every page. The pacing is steady, and while it’s a slow burn, there’s something wonderfully soothing about that. It never feels boring — quite the opposite! You’ll find yourself fully immersed in the world of the characters, eager to know what happens next.

Tova: The Heart of the Story

Tova, our main character, is just so incredibly relatable. She’s a 70-year-old woman navigating grief, loss, and the complexities of life, yet her strength and resilience shine through. Her story is one that so many of us can connect with, even if we’ve never been in her exact shoes. It’s Tova’s honesty and quiet determination that really carry the heart of this book. You can’t help but root for her as she faces her past and tries to find peace.

Marcellus: The Unexpected Star

Let’s talk about Marcellus, the octopus. Yes, you read that right—an octopus. He’s one of the most intriguing characters I’ve come across in a long time! His wit, charm, and unique perspective on human life keep you hooked, and you’ll find yourself flipping pages just to get more of his insights. Marcellus offers a refreshing break from the usual character types we see in fiction, and his chapters are an absolute delight.

Cameron: A Bit of a Miss

While Tova and Marcellus are beautifully developed, Cameron, one of the other key characters, left me a little confused. He’s supposed to be 30, but his immaturity and behavior often felt much younger. I know this was intentional to some extent, but it wasn’t entirely believable for me. There were moments where I couldn’t quite connect with him, and it felt like he was more of a puzzle that didn’t quite fit.

The Ending: Cozy and Satisfying

The ending of Remarkably Bright Creatures is the literary equivalent of being wrapped up in a cozy blanket. Everything comes together in such a satisfying way, leaving you with a sense of warmth and closure. It’s not overly dramatic or showy — just a gentle, heartfelt conclusion that feels right.

Final Thoughts

I’m giving Remarkably Bright Creatures 4.5 out of 5 stars. It’s a slow, comforting read with deeply relatable characters and an intriguing narrative that keeps you coming back for more. The book's strength lies in its ability to create an emotional connection with the reader, making it a perfect pick for when you need something to curl up with and just enjoy
